How Does Integrated Community Care Connect With Senior Day Care in Korea?

🌿 What is integrated community care in South Korea?
Integrated community care coordinates health care, long-term care and everyday support for people who have difficulty managing daily life. Its purpose is to help people continue living in familiar surroundings with support suited to their needs.
South Korea’s legal framework took effect on March 27, 2026. Local governments coordinate assessment, individual support planning, service connections and follow-up. The Ministry of Health and Welfare describes this as an approach that brings services together around the person.
For families, a useful starting question is: “Where does my parent need help during an ordinary day?” The answer may involve several services, each addressing a different part of daily life.
🌤️ Where does senior day care fit in?
Senior day care offers support at a center for part of the day, after which the older person returns home. Depending on the center and the individual’s care plan, this may include meals, assistance with daily activities and opportunities for social and structured activities.
Day care can address an important part of the day. Families may still need to consider what happens before departure, after returning home and on days when the center is closed.
A person might, for example, attend day care while the family also explores support for accessing medical appointments. This is an illustrative situation, not a guaranteed package of benefits.
The Ministry’s integrated care guidance includes day and night care among the long-term care services that may be linked through the system. Which services are appropriate depends on assessment and the individual support plan.

📝 How can families request support?
Families can contact the administrative welfare center serving the older person’s address or a National Health Insurance Service branch.
The official guidance allows applications by the person concerned and eligible family members. Staff from relevant institutions may also apply with the person’s consent.
The process involves identifying care needs, developing an individual support plan and connecting the person with appropriate services. Follow-up reviews consider whether the support remains suitable as circumstances change.
When making an inquiry, describe everyday difficulties as clearly as possible. For example, “My mother is alone until late afternoon and needs help with lunch” gives a more useful picture than simply saying she needs care.
🤝 What should families discuss with a day care center?
Ask how the proposed schedule would fit the older person’s routine. Discuss the help they need, the activities they enjoy and how comfortable they feel spending time outside the home.
It is also helpful to ask:
• What hours and days are available?
• What assistance can the center provide?
• What transport arrangements are available for the home address?
• Which charges are covered, and which are paid separately?
• How will the center communicate changes or concerns to the family?
These are questions to confirm with each provider. Service arrangements can differ, and a suitable plan should reflect the older person’s preferences as well as practical care needs.
💬 Frequently asked questions
Can someone without a long-term care grade ask about integrated care?
Yes. The official guidance includes groups beyond existing long-term care beneficiaries, such as certain people leaving hospital and those assessed outside the long-term care grading criteria. Eligibility for a particular service still needs to be checked separately.
Does integrated care make all services free?
No. Coordination does not automatically remove the eligibility rules or charges attached to individual services. Ask about applicable contributions and separate expenses before agreeing to a service.
Can a person who already attends day care request an assessment?
Existing service use can be discussed when requesting support. Explain what help is already in place and which needs remain unmet. Additional connections depend on the assessment and support plan.
🌷 Everyday care at GARIM
At GARIM, we share records of activities such as coloring and hands-on learning materials. These everyday moments help show the interests and individuality of the older adults taking part.
When considering care, families can tell us about their parent’s daily routine, preferences and assistance needs. This provides a starting point for discussing senior day care or residential care options.
This article explains the national integrated care framework. It does not confirm GARIM’s participation in a particular local integrated care program or guarantee a service referral.
