🌿 When does free flu vaccination begin for older adults in Korea?

South Korea’s 2026–2027 national influenza vaccination programme opens in stages for adults aged 65 and older. The revised starting dates are October 6 for those aged 75 and above, October 12 for those aged 70–74, and October 15 for those aged 65–69.

These dates apply to Korea’s national programme. Readers living elsewhere should check their local vaccination guidance.

Age groupEligible birth datesStart date
75 and olderOn or before December 31, 1951October 6, 2026
70–74January 1, 1952–December 31, 1956October 12, 2026
65–69January 1, 1957–December 31, 1961October 15, 2026

The programme runs through April 30, 2027. Check vaccine availability with the participating clinic before travelling.

🌿 Why was the schedule brought forward?

Influenza is a respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses. It is commonly called the flu.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, or KDCA, announced an earlier vaccination schedule in response to unusually early influenza activity. Its decision considered the outbreak situation, vaccine supply and healthcare providers’ readiness. An influenza advisory had been issued on September 11.

For families, the practical step is to check the revised dates instead of relying on an older notice saved on a phone or printed earlier in the season.

🌿 How can families prepare for a clinic visit?

Start by confirming the older person’s birth date and calling a participating vaccination provider. Ask whether an appointment is needed, whether vaccine is available and what identification to bring.

A short written note can make the consultation easier. Include current medicines, previous reactions to vaccines and any health concerns the person wants to discuss. A family member can help communicate this information without taking over the older person’s choices.

For someone with limited mobility, plan transport and allow enough time for an unhurried visit. Ask the clinic about access arrangements if a wheelchair or other assistance is needed.

🌿 Is the COVID-19 vaccination schedule the same?

Not entirely. Under the October 2 announcement, COVID-19 vaccination begins on October 12 for adults aged 70 and older, and October 15 for those aged 65–69.

This matters particularly for people aged 75 and above: their flu vaccination programme starts on October 6, before their COVID-19 vaccination start date. If arranging both vaccinations, ask the provider to confirm eligibility, availability and suitable timing.

🌿 What should happen after vaccination?

KDCA advises remaining at the vaccination site for 20–30 minutes to observe for possible reactions. Include this waiting period when arranging transport home.

Tell staff promptly if the person feels unwell during the observation period. Before leaving, ask what symptoms to watch for at home and whom to contact with concerns. Keeping the clinic’s instructions with the vaccination record makes them easier to find later.

🌿 Frequently asked questions

Q. Does my parent have to attend on the first eligible day?

No. The starting date marks the opening of vaccination for that age group, rather than a one-day appointment window. Arrange a visit within the programme period and confirm local availability.

Q. My parent lives in a nursing home. Should I book independently?

Check with the facility first. Ask whether vaccination has already been arranged and share any appointment made elsewhere. Coordinating the plans helps avoid confusion about dates and vaccination records.

Q. Is a flu vaccination from last year enough?

Do not assume that last year’s vaccination covers this season. KDCA emphasises annual vaccination for people at higher risk as circulating variants change. Discuss the current season’s vaccination with the healthcare professional.

🌿 A small amount of planning can make the day easier

Supporting an older parent can begin with a simple question: “Would you like me to help check your vaccination date?”

Write down the appointment, prepare identification together and agree on transport. Giving the person time to ask questions is just as valuable as organising the practical details.
