A message addressed to the children of Garim, preserved on a weathered wooden plaque.
What Did We Find While Cleaning the Pavilion?
While cleaning the pavilion beside Garim’s pond, we noticed a wooden plaque beneath the exposed roof beams. Its surface had weathered, but the larger lettering was still readable.
The message begins with an address to the children of Garim. It expresses a wish for them to grow up with good character, courage, and wisdom.
Finding those words in a place now associated with older adults gave us a reason to pause. We had set out to clean and organize a familiar space. Instead, we also found a small record of the people who had cared about it before us.
What Does the Inscription Mean?
The main inscription refers to “Garim Kkumdongsan,” a name that can be loosely translated as “Garim Dream Garden.” It mentions Youth Month and describes alumni association members and parents bringing their goodwill together for the children.
The central sentiment can be translated as:
“With affection for you, we bring our hearts together, hoping that you will grow up upright, spirited, and wise.”
This is a translation of the central message, rather than a complete translation of every inscription on the plaque. The final wording includes “꽃나무 정,” whose precise meaning needs further confirmation. The smaller writing also contains details that we cannot confidently transcribe from these photographs.
Keeping those uncertainties visible matters. A historical object deserves to be described carefully, even when its message feels immediately familiar.
Why Did a Message for Children Resonate in a Senior Care Setting?
Every older person has a childhood behind them: a time of learning, hopes, friendships, and encouragement from others. Many have also spent years wishing for their own children and grandchildren to thrive.
The plaque brought that continuity to mind.
Its words were written for children, yet the affection behind them is recognizable across generations. Wanting a child to grow with confidence and wanting an older adult to spend a comfortable, respected day both begin with attention to another person.
This is our reflection on the discovery, rather than a claim about the pavilion’s history. We do not yet know enough to describe how the site’s earlier use connects with its present role.
What we can say is that the message prompted us to look at the space—and the lives around it—with renewed attention.

What Can an Everyday Place Tell Us About Its Past?
A garden is often described through what changes: flowers opening, leaves turning, new planting, or repairs. Yet some of its most interesting details are the things that have quietly remained.
An inscription can preserve a name once used for a place. A wooden beam can show the marks of age. A familiar building may hold words that people have passed beneath for years without stopping to read.
At Garim, we photographed both the plaque and its surroundings. The close view records the writing, while the wider view shows where it hangs. Together, the photographs preserve more context than a transcription alone.
For now, this is a modest record of a discovery. If reliable information about the plaque becomes available, that can become part of a later account.
Could the Photographs Open a Conversation?
The photographs might offer a gentle starting point for conversation with older adults who are interested. A pavilion, a school-related inscription, or an old place name may invite someone to share a personal memory.
Questions could be simple: “Did you have a place like this near your school?” or “Was there a favorite place where you rested as a child?”
There is no need to expect a particular memory or a detailed answer. Looking together, listening, and letting the conversation follow the person’s interests can be enough.
We have not yet recorded residents’ responses to this plaque. Any future stories should be shared as their own recollections, with appropriate permission.
Questions About the Garim Plaque
What is the main message?
The inscription expresses affection for the children of Garim and hopes that they will grow up with good character, courage, and wisdom. It credits alumni association members and parents with bringing their goodwill together.
Do we know when the plaque was installed?
The exact date has not been confirmed. Some smaller lettering is difficult to read from the available photographs, so we have left those details untranscribed.
Does the plaque establish the full history of the pavilion?
No. It provides a useful clue through its wording and the name “Garim Kkumdongsan,” but further records or reliable testimony would be needed to explain the pavilion’s history.
Preserving the Words, Caring for the Place
The cleaning tools were there for a practical task. The plaque gave us something else to carry away: a wish for children’s futures, still visible on a piece of wood.
We will continue caring for the garden and recording the details we can verify. Sometimes that means photographing a seasonal flower. Sometimes it means looking up and noticing words that have been waiting quietly above us.
