Walking for Healthy Aging: Why Gait and Balance Matter for Older Adults
Walking is one of the simplest movements we perform every day, but as we grow older, maintaining the ability to walk safely becomes increasingly important.
At Garim Nursing Home and Garim Day Care Center, our Tuesday afternoon program, held from 3:00 to 3:30 p.m., includes a guided walking and gait activity designed around each participant’s individual abilities.
The goal is not to see who can walk the fastest or cover the greatest distance.
Instead, we focus on safe movement, appropriate pacing, balance, and continued participation in everyday physical activity.
Why Is Walking So Important in Later Life?
Walking supports many of the activities that allow older adults to remain engaged in daily life.
Getting up to use the bathroom, walking to the dining area, moving around the home, enjoying a garden, or simply going outside with family all depend to some degree on mobility.
With aging, muscle mass and strength may gradually decline. Balance can also become less reliable.
Joint problems, neurological conditions, changes in vision, dizziness, frailty, and certain medications may further affect the way an older person walks.
For this reason, changes in walking should not automatically be dismissed as “just getting older.”
A noticeable change from a person’s usual walking pattern can sometimes provide important information about their health.
Walking Helps Keep the Body Active
Walking involves much more than moving the legs forward.
The muscles of the thighs, calves, hips, and trunk work together to support the body and maintain stability.
Regular physical activity that is appropriate for an older adult’s health and functional ability can help support strength, mobility, and everyday physical function.
However, more exercise is not always better.
Older adults vary greatly in their physical condition. One person may walk independently, while another may need a cane, walker, or assistance from a caregiver.
That is why an individualized approach is important.
During our walking activities, we encourage each participant to move at a comfortable pace rather than trying to match someone else.
One safe step can be more meaningful than ten rushed steps.
Balance and Fall Prevention
Falls are an important concern in older adults.
A fall can lead to injury or fracture, and the resulting period of reduced activity may contribute to further loss of strength and independence.
Some older adults also become afraid of walking after experiencing a fall. This fear can lead them to move less, which may further weaken their muscles and confidence.
Safe walking activities should therefore include attention to balance and the surrounding environment.
Caregivers may watch for signs such as unusual unsteadiness, dragging of the feet, difficulty standing up, leaning to one side, excessive fatigue, or dizziness.
Appropriate walking aids should also be used when needed.
When a Change in Walking Needs Medical Attention
Gradual changes in mobility can occur with aging, but sudden changes deserve particular attention.
If an older adult suddenly develops weakness on one side of the body, facial drooping, difficulty speaking, severe dizziness, or an abrupt inability to walk normally, urgent medical evaluation may be necessary.
These symptoms should not simply be attributed to old age.
Medication changes can also matter. If dizziness or unsteadiness begins after starting a new medication or changing a dose, it is worth discussing the symptoms with a healthcare professional.
Walking Is Also About Confidence
The value of a walking program cannot be measured only by distance or exercise intensity.
For an older adult who has become less active, standing up and taking several safe steps can be a meaningful achievement.
Participating alongside other people can also make physical activity feel more enjoyable and familiar.
A walking program does not treat dementia, Parkinson’s disease, arthritis, or other medical conditions, nor can it guarantee that falls will be prevented.
What appropriately planned activity can do is provide opportunities for older adults to keep moving within their abilities and support the physical functions they use in everyday life.
Tuesday Afternoon at Garim
Every Tuesday from 3:00 to 3:30 p.m., our seniors participate in the Healthy Walking and Gait Program.
Some walk independently.
Some move more slowly.
Others need assistance or a walking aid.
There is no competition.
The important question is not, “How fast did you walk?”
It is, “Were you able to move safely today?”
Step by step, we want physical activity to remain a natural part of everyday life.
At Garim Nursing Home and Garim Day Care Center, we continue to support each senior according to their individual health and functional abilities. 🌿
