노인 전해질 불균형과 위험신호

When the Heat Wave Ends, Older Adults Remain at Risk of Dehydration and Electrolyte Imbalance

When the Heat Wave Ends, Older Adults Remain at Risk of Dehydration and Electrolyte Imbalance

Many people believe that once the summer heat has passed, the health risks associated with extreme temperatures disappear as well. However, this is not always true for older adults.

Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance may continue for days or even weeks after a heat wave has ended. In geriatric medicine, older adults remain one of the most vulnerable groups because aging naturally reduces total body water, weakens kidney function, and decreases the sensation of thirst.

As a result, an older person may already be dehydrated without realizing it.

What Is an Electrolyte Imbalance?

Dehydration is more than simply not drinking enough water.

When the body loses fluids, it also loses essential minerals known as electrolytes, including sodium, potassium, and chloride.

These minerals play vital roles in maintaining normal body functions by:

• Supporting a regular heartbeat

• Helping muscles contract properly

• Allowing nerves to transmit signals

• Maintaining healthy blood pressure and fluid balance

Even a mild electrolyte imbalance can significantly affect an older adult's health.

Early Warning Signs

Early symptoms are often subtle.

Older adults may experience a dry mouth, fatigue, reduced appetite, or dizziness when standing up. Their urine may become darker than usual, and they may urinate less frequently.

Family members often notice unusual sleepiness, reduced conversation, confusion, or decreased concentration before the older adult recognizes that something is wrong.

These warning signs should never be ignored.

Serious Symptoms

If dehydration worsens, more serious complications may develop, including:

• Muscle cramps

• Severe weakness

• Confusion

• Low blood pressure

• Fainting

• Irregular heartbeat

In severe cases, hospitalization may become necessary. Early recognition and prompt treatment are essential.

Why Older Adults Are More Vulnerable

As people age, their bodies become less efficient at regulating fluids.

Older adults naturally have lower total body water than younger people. Their kidneys are less able to conserve water, and their sense of thirst becomes weaker.

Many also take medications for high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease that may increase fluid loss or affect electrolyte balance.

People living with dementia face an even greater challenge because they may forget to drink water or may be unable to express that they are thirsty.

Prevention Is Better Than Treatment

Fortunately, dehydration is largely preventable.

Rather than waiting until thirst develops, older adults should drink small amounts of water regularly throughout the day.

Water-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, soups, and porridge also contribute to healthy hydration.

Outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day should be limited, even after the weather becomes cooler.

Caregivers should pay close attention to urine color, energy level, appetite, and mental alertness, as these can provide valuable clues about hydration status.

Individuals with heart failure or chronic kidney disease should always follow their physician's recommendations regarding fluid intake.

GARIM Nursing Home's Daily Commitment

At GARIM Nursing Home and GARIM Adult Day Care Center, hydration management is a year-round priority.

Our care team encourages regular fluid intake before and after daily activities, monitors changes in physical condition, and carefully observes each resident's overall health.

Small daily observations often help identify dehydration before it develops into a medical emergency.

Protecting older adults from dehydration involves far more than simply offering water. It requires attentive observation, compassionate support, and professional care every single day.
