여름철 Dehydration in Older Adults: Why Drinking Water Alone May Not Be Enough
Why Are Older Adults More Vulnerable to Dehydration?
As people age, total body water decreases and the sensation of thirst becomes weaker. This means many older adults may already be dehydrated before they even feel thirsty.
Some medications, including certain blood pressure medicines and diuretics, can also increase fluid loss. Older adults with dementia or limited mobility may forget to drink water or may not be able to access it easily.
Common Signs of Dehydration
Watch carefully for these warning signs:
• Dry mouth and cracked lips
• Dark-colored urine or reduced urination
• Dry skin and poor skin elasticity
• Fatigue and unusual weakness
• Dizziness or difficulty walking
• Confusion or excessive sleepiness
• Slow responses or decreased alertness
If an older adult suddenly becomes confused, difficult to wake, or loses consciousness, seek emergency medical care immediately.
Is Drinking More Water Enough?
Not always.
During hot weather, the body loses both water and electrolytes through sweat. Drinking small amounts of water regularly throughout the day is generally better than drinking a large amount all at once.
However, older adults with heart failure or chronic kidney disease may need individualized fluid recommendations from their healthcare provider.
Farm Work Can Be Dangerous During Summer
Many older adults living in rural communities continue working in vegetable gardens or farm fields despite extreme heat.
"I'll only work for a little while."
"I just need to finish this row."
These are common thoughts before heat exhaustion or dehydration develops.
Older adults attending adult day care may also work in the fields before arriving at the center or return to outdoor work after going home.
This greatly increases the risk of dehydration and heat-related illness.
How Families Can Help
Family members can reduce the risk by encouraging these simple habits:
• Avoid outdoor work between approximately 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
• Drink water regularly even without feeling thirsty.
• Wear light-colored, breathable clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.
• Take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
• Never continue working when dizziness, weakness, or nausea develops.
If an older adult collapses, becomes confused, has very hot skin, or shows signs of heat stroke, call emergency medical services immediately.
GARIM Nursing Home's Summer Care
At GARIM Nursing Home, we carefully monitor hydration, food intake, room temperature, and each resident's overall condition during the hot summer months.
We also encourage families attending our Adult Day Care Center to avoid sending older adults to farm work during the hottest hours after returning home.
Preventing dehydration is far easier than treating it.
Sometimes, offering your loved one a glass of water and encouraging them to rest indoors may be the most important care you provide that day.
